Brooke Shields pulled a fast one on Matthew Perry when she guest-starred on Friends back in 1996.
On this morning’s episode of The View, the actress remembered some behind-the-scenes moments from when she played Erika Ford, a woman who was obsessed with Joey Tribbiani’s (Matt LeBlanc) Days of Our Lives character Dr. Drake Ramoray, in Season 2 of Friends.
“You go onto a show that’s so well-oiled and so successful and I was such a fan, all I wanted was for them to like me,” she told the co-hosts on The View. “I just wanted to be funny. But I wasn’t in the group. They were very tight, they had all these inside jokes.”
According to Shields, there was one joke in particular that Perry did.
“You couldn’t do it now, you’d get canceled,” she noted, before adding, “He would run and throw himself on the floor in front of a girl and pretend to look up her skirt. Again, you’d get canceled today.”
Still, Shields was determined to make Perry — who died in October 2023 from a ketamine overdose — laugh.
“I ran so fast from one end of the stage all the way to the other, threw myself on the ground, and pretended to look up his pant leg,” she recalled. “And everybody was quiet and I’m on the floor and I’m like, ‘I just suck. I look like a crazy person.’”
“I’m on the floor for what felt like an hour — it was probably one second — and all of a sudden he started laughing and they all started laughing,” she continued. “And he said, ‘How did you know to do that?’ And I said, ‘I’ve just been watching you and I just wanted to say thank you for giving us such humor.’ So it was really sweet.”
The star joked that she had “rug burns all over [her] knees” as a result.
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
