Jamie Lee Curtis fought back tears as she took the stage on The Tonight Show Wednesday (Jan. 8) evening amid the ongoing wildfires that have razed entire neighborhoods of Los Angeles to the ground.
The Halloween star admitted that she felt like she was “about to cry” as soon as Jimmy Fallon thanked her for being on the show.
“As you know, where I live is on fire right now. Literally the entire city of the Pacific Palisades is on fire right now,” she told the Tonight Show audience as she fought back tears. “It’s fucking gnarly, you guys. It’s just a catastrophe.”
“In California, obviously there have been horrific fires in many places. This is literally where I live, everything— the market I shop in, the schools my kids go to,” she said, adding that “many, many” of her friends “have lost their homes.”
She continued, “It’s a really awful situation. I am obviously going to go home first thing tomorrow to be with my family and try to help my friends.”
Curtis clarified on social media that her home is safe but much of her “beloved neighborhood is gone.” She also shared a photo of the church where she “got sober 25 years ago” in flames.
In another post, she thanked Fallon and his team for their “warmth” during these difficult times.
“My home is safe. My street is safe. Flying to New York and hearing the beginnings of the stories of the fire was very challenging to be far away from my home and family and friends and feeling very powerless,” she wrote on Instagram.
“It was complicated to feel like we were making comedy in the midst of such a profound tragedy across the country, but we did,” she continued. “The hug he gave me in support of my fragile feelings will always be remembered.”
Curtis also announced on social media that she will be donating $1 million to the relief efforts.
The Everything Everywhere All At Once star is not the only celebrity to be impacted by the fires. James Woods also became emotional on CNN after he lost his home.
“One day you’re swimming in the pool and the next day it’s all gone,” he said through tears during an appearance yesterday on CNN.
