The Marlow Murder Club premiered on Masterpiece on PBS last night, introducing mystery fans to a trio of new eccentric sleuths doing their darnedest to solve a series of grisly crimes. Retired archeologist (and crossword puzzle writer) Judith Potts (Samantha Bond), professional dog walker Suzie Harris (Jo Martin), and bored vicar’s wife Becks Starling (Cara Horgan) team up to find out who is executing their neighbors in their otherwise idyllic town of Marlow.
The Marlow Murder Club is set, like so many other Masterpiece mysteries, in a picturesque part of England. The town of Marlow is situated on the River Thames and boasts a vibrant rowing scene. Marlow’s charming high street is dotted with high-end art galleries and auction houses. Becks Starling literally lives in a picturesque vicarage! (Complete with updated tech, inside, but still, a real vicarage!)
Of course, the charming architecture we see in The Marlow Murder Club is merely the twisted backdrop to cold-blooded crimes. The Marlow Murder Club opens with Judith Potts overhearing her wealthy neighbor being shot and the first episode ends with poor Suzie discovering her friend murdered in his own bed!
So where was The Marlow Murder Club filmed? Is Marlow a real town in England, or yet another fictional hamlet invented for us to lust after from our sofas? Here’s everything you need to know about Masterpiece’s The Marlow Murder Club filming locations…
Where is The Marlow Murder Club Filmed? All About Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England:
Ready for a twist? The Marlow Murder Club is literally filmed in the town of Marlow in the UK! Yes, Marlow is a real place! It’s a country town in Buckinghamshire, set along the River Thames. If you go to Marlow, you will see all of the shops, houses, churches, and scenery that Judith, Becks, and Suzie visit while they’re on the case.
The Marlow Murder Club is based on the books of the same name by mystery author Robert Thorogood. If Thorogood’s name sounds familiar, it’s probably because he’s also the writer behind another PBS hit, Death in Paradise. While Thorogood happily traveled to the Caribbean to research that series, for his follow up, he decided to stay closer to home. Thorogood literally lives in Marlow, which inspired The Marlow Murder Club‘s setting.
Thorogood told Radio Times, “All of the locations in The Marlow Murder Club were real in the book, so it’s been really weird watching them actually hire the places like All Saints Church, which is described in the book.”
Besides All Saints Church, The Marlow Murder Club also shot on the Marlow High Street, the Marlow Suspension Bridge, and the Marlow Rowing Club. In fact, the show specifically shot scenes during the annual Marlow Rowing Regatta. How’s that for realism?
Marlow is located just 33 miles west of London, meaning you can easily hop on a train from Paddington Station, make a transfer at Maidenhead, and get there in under an hour. Food for thought for your next Anglian adventure!
How Many Episodes are in The Marlow Murder Club?
Curious how long it will take for Judith, Suzie, and Becks to solve the murders plaguing Marlow? There are four episodes total in the first season of The Marlow Murder Club. That means new episodes will premiere on Masterpiece on PBS on Sunday nights from now through November 17.
Masterpiece has already picked up The Marlow Murder Club for a second season.
