Some criminals took over “the best elementary school in the universe” on last night’s Abbott Elementary — but it’s probably not what you think.

Yes, last night was the highly anticipated first part of a crossover between two Philly-set shows that could not be more different: Abbott and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The crossover took place on Abbott Elementary and showed the Sunny Gang entering the world of Abbott — documentary cameras and all. A second part, showing the same weeklong period through the Always Sunny lens, will air as part of that show’s upcoming 17th season.

If this episode was the Always Sunny Gang with a PG rating, expect to see the Abbott crew in a more R-rated setting soon.

Ahead of the first episode, Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson told Seth Meyers, “If you’re a fan of Abbott, it’s gonna feel like a regular Abbott episode. If you have never seen It’s Always Sunny, you won’t know the difference. There will just be these white people on the show all of the sudden.”

When Does It’s Always Sunny Come Back?

Though no dates have been confirmed, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 is expected to premiere on FXX at some point in 2025. The new season will include the second half of the Abbott Elementary crossover.

The first 16 seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are currently streaming on Hulu.
