This week you can prepare for New Year’s Eve by reminiscing about one of the most famous New Year’s Eves of all, 1999, when everyone awaited the end of the world, a.k.a. Y2K. Kyle Mooney’s homage to that freakout, Y2K, is one of several great films arriving this week on demand. Also out this week is Gladiator II, and The Order.
In The Order, Jude Law stars as FBI agent Terry Husk, who begins to suspect that a series of crimes committed in the Pacific Northwest are not just random criminal acts, but are all being carried out by a neo-Nazi group calling themselves The Order. Nicholas Hoult plays Bob Matthews, the real-life leader of the white supremacist group.
These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.
Y2K
It’s about time someone turned the bizarre collective paranoia we all had on the eve of the new millennium into a movie, an it’s fitting that it’s a goofy thriller that pokes fun at the 1990s. Saturday Night Live alum Kyle Mooney wrote, directed and stars in Y2K, about New Year’s Eve at the end of 1999 when we were all obsessed with the fact that the entire grid might shut down because of a couple of misplaced zeroes (or whatever). The dark satire co-stars Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison with an era-specific cameo from Fred Durst, of course.
Gladiator II
Directed by Ridley Scott, the sequel to Scott’s popular 2000 Oscar-winner Gladiator brings a new cast of characters to the world of ancient Roman combat sport. Paul Mescal stars as Lucius Verus, the nephew of Roman emperor Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original movie). Pedro Pascal stars as General Marcus Acacius, while Denzel Washington stars as Macrinus, who mentors Mescal’s character in the ways of being a gladiator. The film is out now on demand.
