‘American Primeval’
American Primeval begins as many gritty westerns do: tossing both us, and a couple of city slickers, into the hell that was the Old West. There’s violence, cruelty, sexual assault, illness, bigotry, and just plain gross stuff everywhere you look. However, by the end of director and executive producer Peter Berg’s six part series, American Primeval also offers a fascinating rejoinder to its initial interpretation of the old West. The show, which follows a few different heroes, heroines, and villains through gruesome ordeals, ultimately damns the evils of colonialism and exalts the power of natural community.
